Biotechnology Of Thrips

Pest thrips species are restricted mainly to the Thripidae, of which about 50 species are considered to cause damage to one or more crop species and all 12 vectors of tospoviruses are members of this family. These vector species share several behavioural characteristics, including high locomotory activity, a wide range of host plants, a short generation time, a predisposition to parthenogenesis, a strongly female-biased sex ratio and the habit of puncturing plant cells. Besides these behavioural characteristics, survival and propagation of virus particles requires suitable tissues that facilitate invasion and transmission within the body of a vector thrips. In general, the egg, larval, pupal and adult periods last for 4-5, 2-3, 2-3 and 10 - 30 days respectively. Immatures are a cream to yellowish color and adults are either dark brown or yellow/orange depending on the species.
